House Painters in Western New York face unique challenges

Image
As a residential painting company, we also provide exterior house painting services for our clients. Unlike other parts of the country, Buffalo NY gets about 5 months of exterior painting weather if we are lucky. May – October. Overnight temperatures should be above 50F for proper drying and curing of acrylic coatings with out any weirdness taking place. Now certainly many of these paints can be applied down to 35F, however it takes a lot longer for the paints to dry, and dew has the potential to affect the sheen of the paint if its not fully dry in time. Plus paint has a tendency to drip or sag the longer it is wet. Exterior Painting Season Everyone is watching the weather in the spring. We begin getting calls for exterior painting starting in February/March. Many homeowners realize that in order to get in with a good reputable company like Carrigan Painting, you have to start early. As soon as the weather breaks from rain every day to warm and sunny, we try to get outside as we rea

Deck Painting in Lancaster NY - Rust Oleum 6x Review

Image
Deck Painting Lancaster, NY We stopped painting decks a few years ago due to the inability to get a product that actually lasts longer than 8-12 months. Spend thousands of dollars to have a painter professionally refinish your deck just to have it peal in sheets with in a year is a great way to tarnish a great reputation. Its so bad we stopped painting decks! However one of our clients used a product by Rust Oleum 3-4 years ago and it seemed to hold up well. A lot better than anything we have seen. So we decided to go ahead with refinishing her deck, using the same product she used previously. Another contractor pressure washed her deck prior to our arrival, so we scraped it, power sanded, and then applied 1 coat of Rust oleum 6x to the deck. The paint is THICK. About 2x the thickness of Sherwin Williams Duration before they changed the formula in 2021. Easy to work with though. It brushes out nicely and has excellent self levelling properties. Costs around $50 per gallon and you can

Exterior House Painting in Kenmore NY - Updated 6/28/24

Image
There were a few surprises with this one. A couple of hard to reach areas proved to be a bit of a challenge to reach safely. In the end, we were able to make it happen using scaffolding. Initially we weren't planning to use any scaffolding, however turns out we needed it. First we pressure wash the exterior of the home to remove dust and dirt. Then we manually scrape the loose pealing paint, power sand the rough areas spot prime the bare spots, then caulk. After we apply two full coats of paint to all areas being painted. This ensures a long lasting durable finish. Making progress.. The white is exterior oil primer Update 6/17 This area proved to be more difficult than anticipated, so we set up scaffolding to get to this difficult to reach area. Update 6/22 Making progress The cedar shake on the top left took a bit longer than we anticipated. Plus the high heat and 100% humidity didn't help at all. Making progress. The scaffold proved to be much more useful. Being on wheels a

Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Newstead

Image
Popcorn removal from a living room ceiling, and hallway. We skim coated the ceiling, primed and painted the same. The homeowners opted to paint the walls themselves.  Small Crack Repair We V out the crack to give the new material something to grab on too, and hopefully the crack won't come back All done: Since we were all set up in the stairwell, we cut in the top of the walls for them.                                                   Carrigan Painting 716-697-3560

Trying out the new NYS Compliant Oil Primer and Ceiling Painting

Image
This home has really nice sand swirl texture in most of the rooms. Among the best we have seen. However the ceilings haven't been painted in a few years so we are priming and painting them to make them white again Some minor cracks in the ceiling we opted to glue and then caulk instead of opening them up. With swirl, you can hide cracks easier than you can actually repairing them. Especially if their small like these We weren't originally going to prime the ceiling, however we decided to just do it as it would make for a better job. This also gave us the perfect opportunity to try out PPG's new NYS compliant primer. So the priming is a freebie for the homeowner.  We tried the new SEAL GRIP Interior/Exterior Universal Alkyd Primer that is NYS compliant as a possible replacement for our go to oil primer, however we are not satisfied with Seal Grip Alkyd. We won't be using that again! After 5 HOURS the primer was still tack
