Popcorn ceiling repair is a niche with in a niche. As the number of contractors that offer this service dwindles yearly, we are receiving more and more calls to repair popcorn ceilings than to remove them.

These folks had a sink overflow at 2 AM, and didn’t notice until 7 AM. After turning the water off, they used high powered fans, to dry the ceiling. Unfortunately the popcorn texture pealed off the drywall ceiling over a large area – approximately 4′ x 10′.

Because the drywall was still structurally sound, removing the board wasn’t required. (They got lucky). They scraped off the texture. We spot primed the bare drywall with PVA drywall primer, and then primed that with Sherwin Williams Problock HS Oil. When dealing with bare drywall and stains, you MUST prime it first with a water based product prior to the application of an oil or shellac primer. The reason being that the solvent based primers will lift the hairs in the paper of the drywall which will create a texture that will be nearly impossible to get rid of. Even though we are spraying texture over this area, we didn’t want to risk any wierdness coming through so we didn’t skip the water based primer first.

Once the oil primer was dry, we sprayed medium popcorn texture over the affected area. Over the course of 2 days, we applied two full coats of paint to the ceiling. Painting a popcorn ceiling takes a lot more time than painting other textures or smooth ceilings as you must wait for the cut in or edging, to dry prior to rolling the ceiling or risk delamination of the existing texture due to moisture saturation.
