We are back to finish what we started(Part 1) back in November. The bathroom ceiling has a paint texture to it being that is has been painted a bunch of times over the last 60 years, and our plaster patch is perfectly smooth. This texture mismatch will show if we just prime and paint it. So we skim coated the entire ceiling, so the texture is the same across the surface.

Skim Coating and Priming

After the ceiling was sanded and primed, we then painted the ceiling twice. This ensures a uniform sheen and texture over the entire surface.
Painting the Bathroom

This bathroom was painted last year, almost to the day, using Sherwin Williams interior Duration. We originally were going to just re-cut the top of the walls, however after only a year, the paint had faded so much, we had to repaint the entire bathroom. For paint that costs $80+ per gallon, we didn’t expect such a drastic degradation of the coating so soon. Had this bathroom been painted with Behr, this wouldn’t have been a problem. This is another why we don’t use Sherwin Williams paints anymore. The quality just isn’t there.
The following three images- the cut in, or edging, is dry. The walls faded that much! WoW! Not a good look Sherwin!

Once the bathroom was rolled it looked better, and while the paint seemed to cover better than in years past, the paint exhibited properties that we weren’t prepared for – mainly the product is so thick now, that we had to be careful when rolling it due to sagging of the film. We will stick with Behr Dynasty, which has none of these issues, and is cheaper.
On to the Kitchen…
There was an old pipe on the roof, that they had removed, and when the roofer was cutting the pipe off, it vibrated inside the wall, and broke some plaster in the kitchen. We repaired the hole, primed the patch, and painted the wall and ceiling in the kitchen:

Its common for the paint to lose adhesion in cases like this and peal off the plaster.

We attempted to touch up the ceiling, however (Sherwin Williams strikes again) the original paint used, didn’t match.

All done:

Final thoughts:
We used Sherwin Williams exclusively for over ten years. Loved their products! However in the spring of 2021, they reformulated their architectural coatings (house paints) and not for the better, and then proceeded to lie about it for over two years. This was a corporate decision and they kept their retail stores in the dark over it (The retail people at Sherwin, are Amazing!!). When we questioned it at the time, we were gaslit by corporate. After switching to the “homeowner/DIY” Behr products, all the problems we were having with Sherwin vanished. If Sherwin ever brings back the product quality that was available pre-2021, we would switch back, but that is unlikely to happen.
Overall this was a fun project, and the results are amazing as always.
