Drywall restoration is a skilled trade that requires years of hands on experience to do quickly and efficiently. If you have drywall damage that you feel is larger than just a repair, its important to choose a contractor that has provable experience dealing with the complexities of restoration work.
Because sometimes the worst problems show up quietly, like in this case, where a refrigerator water line started leaking overnight without anyone knowing. By morning, the homeowners woke to water damage that had destroyed their walls in almost half the house.
The result? Months of disruption. Nearly two feet of drywall, trim, and flooring had to be removed in every affected area of the home.
As a precaution, mold remediation was called and once they finished their work, that’s when we were called in, to repair the drywall and repaint the affected areas.
🛠️ Why We Use Green Board for Drywall Repairs
For our drywall repair jobs, we don’t just replace the drywall with standard sheets. We use green board, a moisture-resistant drywall that also has added mold resistance.
For about $10 more per sheet, it’s a simple upgrade that makes a big difference. Especially in kitchens and bathrooms or in homes that have already experienced water damage, we believe it’s worth every penny. If it leaked once before…
⏱️ Making Time for the Cabinet Install
While our schedule is usually fully booked, we made a quick half-day trip to the site early in the process to complete just the kitchen wall. That way, the homeowners could stay on track with their cabinet installation later that week.

After a couple of weeks we were able to come back and formally begin this project.

This corner, took a lot more time than we anticipated. Its a built in pocket for one of those accordion style sliding doors. Well they don’t have the door anymore, and asked us to fill in the pocket so the corner is finished nicely. We didn’t think it would take 6 hours LOL!

We ended up cutting down some scrap wood, and then using 3/8″ drywall to make the bevel work with out looking bad. The 1/2″ we typically use, was too thick, and packing it in with durabond is not practical. So this one 7 foot tall, 5″ wide strip of drywall cost $20. Because you have to buy the sheet. No idea what we will use the rest of the sheet for since this is the first time using 3/8″ drywall in 10 years.
Is green board better for mold resistance?
Yes, while it’s not waterproof, green board is treated to resist moisture and mold better than standard drywall, making it ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.
Do you need permits to replace drywall after a leak?
In most towns near Buffalo, simple drywall repair doesn’t require a permit, but full remediation or structural repairs often do.
Painting
After all the patchwork was done, we primed all the bare drywall and patches with Behr 438 General Purpose latex primer. Then applied two coats of paint to the ceilings, and two coats of paint to the walls using Behr Dynasty
First the Kitchen:
Most of the damage here was around the closet and behind the base cabinets.

Dining Room:
There wasn’t any damage to the dining room walls, but we painted them anyways to complete the restoration project

Living room:
This is where the bulk of the repairs took place

Bedroom:

Notable areas:
Two things;
First: The corner closest to the camera took a bit of time to make it look right. We are very happy with the results of this corner. That is what 6 hours looks like. We had to create it, we are not carpenters.
Second: There is no line in the wall from the repairs on the bottom 24″. I was so impressed with this level of work, that I had to take a picture while the wall was still wet with paint and super shiny – meaning all the defects in the work show. Its nearly perfect! WoW! This is truly amazing work by Ms Stacy. The line at the top of the patch is gone. That is very difficult to achieve, and often times isn’t achievable due to a whole host of external factors beyond our control.

Trim:
Not really pictured, but we did paint all the trim in these areas as well.
While the ceilings didn’t suffer any direct damage, there was damage to all the ceilings in the affected rooms from the company that did the mitigation. They stapled plastic to the ceilings and left hundreds of little holes and black tool marks all over the ceilings. So those had to be patched, primed and painted.

This project took 5 days to complete.
