We are back for round two! Twelve years ago we painted this home. In 2012 we changed the color from stark white, to a bluish grey. We also replaced the shutter with new ones. Its actually cheaper to buy new shutters, than it is to paint the shutters (plastic ones). The UV from the sun, makes the plastic shutters are made out of very brittle. We have to take them down to paint behind them, so they are already off the house.
Please spray around shutters with bee spray prior to the arrival of your painters. Bees love to make nests behind shutters.
The paint we used on this home was Benjamin Moore Exterior Aura. Held up pretty good. The new color is also Benjamin Moore. Its $100 per gallon. The most expensive exterior paint available off the shelf in Western New York. Its also the best. After using it again on this home however, we like the workability and coverage of Behr Dynasty better – $80 per gallon.

Homes like this are usually pretty straight forward to paint. Given that the siding can’t be sanded, all you can do is scrape it. Also sanding the siding will destroy the profile of the siding. Not to mention releasing asbestos fibers into the air is never a good idea.
Our application method on this home was brush and roll. We were going to spray it (much faster – like 5x as fast) but the wind would not cooperate so we did it the old fashioned way. Two coats on everything.

We addressed bare spots by spot-priming them with Sherwin Williams oil-based exterior primer.

This home has a unique feature I haven’t seen on any other home. Retractable aluminum awnings. They still work like new. The spring mechanism in the roller on the end must be quite robust to still be going strong after 50 years.

Last time we painted this home, it started to rain when we were doing this side. The paint didn’t run off the house, however this side of the house ended up having to be completely repainted due to the sheen being off. So this side had 3 coats of blue.

The house came out really nice. The pictures do not do it justice! The house is glowing.
