Painting Large Vaulted Ceiling After Minor Water Damage

Painting Large Vaulted Ceiling After Minor Water Damage

When the roof leaked this winter, the homeowners knew we’d take care of it the right way, no matter how small the issue was. Even though the water damage was minor, the insurance company approved repainting the entire vaulted ceiling to keep everything uniform. Painting over even minor water damage without proper repairs will result in visible defects.

We’ve done quite a bit of work in this home over the years on the Amherst/Pendleton line. Once the roof was fixed, we came in to repair the damage and take care of other areas of the ceiling they weren’t happy with. If we’re painting a ceiling, we’re not painting over damage, we’re fixing it first.

It took about three hours to fully protect the room. Because the ceiling is being painted, the walls must be covered from ceiling to floor. Even with low-overspray paints, this level of preparation protects the walls and furnishings. All furniture that could not be removed was also covered.

The next phase focused on repairing minor damage on the ceiling that the homeowners were concerned about. Ceilings like this are prone to nail pops, stress cracks, and visible staining, especially when a roof leak above the ceiling has been involved. We repaired all damaged areas and addressed the staining caused by the prior leak.

The homeowners specifically credited William C. Rott & Son for their prompt response and attention to detail in resolving the roofing issue. They spoke highly of the experience.

Once repairs were complete, we spot-primed all affected areas. This step ensures uniform absorption between new and existing materials and helps prevent flashing after the finish coats are applied. This is why ceiling painting after water damage requires additional preparation.

Once the repairs and priming were done, we began rolling the ceiling. We will need the scaffold to cut in a few areas, so before we get that in the living room, we finished painting the hall and dining room, so we can maneuver easier with the scaffold tomorrow – Wednesday.

First coat of ceiling paint. We always do two coats of paint, especially when painting a ceiling with minor water damage.

We are actively on this job so we will have more pictures over the next couple of days.

More to come!
