Popcorn Ceiling Repair and Painting – Golden Pond – Part II

Popcorn Ceiling Repair and Painting – Golden Pond – Part II

We are back to finish the popcorn ceiling repair we started prior to Christmas 2025. After repairing the water damage to the drywall ceiling in the kitchen, we sprayed popcorn ceiling texture over the repair. Then we primed the area with oil base primer to block the water stains from both the leak, and the new texture. (A water stain will often appear after applying new popcorn texture to a repair).

We applied two full coats of paint to the ceiling over the course of two days. We always do two coats on paint on ceilings, especially popcorn ceilings as the first coat often causes a streaking effect to appear as the popcorn absorbs the paint at different rates causing both a sheen and color differentiation. The second coat of paint, solves that problem.

Painting a popcorn ceiling also takes longer than a smooth ceiling. The edging or ‘cut’ must dry, prior to rolling the paint on the ceiling, or you risk peeling the texture off. A popcorn ceiling will also absorb about 50% more paint than a smooth ceiling. Typically speaking, a textured ceiling like this often takes 2x as long to paint as a smooth ceiling. We can only safely do one coat of paint per day, or de-lamination of the texture is likely to occur.
