At Carrigan Painting, we just wrapped up a full interior repaint for one of our repeat clients in Willow Ridge Estates, Amherst NY. We originally completed a smaller job for them a while back, and this time, they invited us back for a much larger project. We were happy to deliver the same high-quality results they’ve come to expect from us.
This project involved removing a wallpaper board installed 25 years ago, and repainting the upstairs hallway, living room, and dining room using Behr Dynasty Matte in Antique White. In addition, we repainted all ceilings, applying two full coats to ensure even coverage and consistent finish throughout.

Why Two Coats?
Isn’t One Enough?
You might be wondering: with today’s high-end paints claiming “one coat coverage,” why do we still insist on two coats—even on ceilings?
Here’s the simple truth: it just looks better.
While premium paints like Behr Dynasty and Benjamin Moore Aura can technically cover in one coat under ideal conditions, we’ve found that even the best products can leave behind:
- Holidays (thin or missed spots that only show up at certain angles or lighting especially on large vaulted ceilings)
- Inconsistent sheen along large, continuous walls
Especially with matte and flat finishes, minor imperfections become more noticeable when the light changes throughout the day. A single coat may appear passable at first glance, but under scrutiny—especially with natural light coming in through bay windows or skylights—uneven coverage and sheen differences can become obvious.
That’s not acceptable to us. We paint to a professional standard, not a DIY one.

Why Two Coats Make Sense
(Even Financially)
From a time and cost standpoint, it’s also a smart decision:
- Once the room is prepped and the first coat is on, applying a second coat is quicker typically just 1/2 of the original time. There are caveats here, as some of the ceilings out there are quite large and high.
- The extra material used is the cost of the paint, especially on smooth, non-textured ceilings. (Popcorn ceilings need to be fully dry prior to applying a second coat of paint. Which means the next day in most cases)
- The result? Better-looking walls and ceilings that last longer and reflect our commitment to quality craftsmanship.
Minor Repairs Are Always Included!
Before painting, we took care of a few small repairs:
- Nail pops
- Stress cracks above the bay window area
These types of repairs are common in older homes and homes that experience two seasons (Snow & Roadwork). We always address them as part of our prep, ensuring a smooth surface.

Carrigan Painting did a truly outstanding job this past week.
They painted our dining room and living room (vaulted) ceilings as well as the walls. Connected to the living room walls and ceiling was an area of stairs going up to the second floor which they also painted along with the second-floor hallway ceiling and walls.
In the downstairs area they aloo removed a wallpaper boarder at the top of the walls. This border had been there for 25 years, and they removed it with little difficulty.
They were on time each day, worked a full day, very neat and were pleasant the times we were around them.
At the end of their last full day, they asked us to review all of their work and mark any areas with identifying tape where we had questions. There were just a couple of such areas that we questioned, and it turns out they were observed because of lighting issues in the house; not because they missed anything.
This was the second time we used them, and we will hire them again for our next painting job
