Great Room and Kitchen Painting!

Great Room and Kitchen Painting!

This week we are in Clarence NY repainting a kitchen and Great Room.

When having the largest room in your home painted, its important to remove as much stuff out of the room as possible. This includes the TV.

Getting ready to repair some drywall cracks, and nail pops. A common problem with these large open spaces in homes. Drywall tape failures are quite common! We begin by repairing all of this damage. And to make our lives easier, and safer, we set up scaffolding to reach the higher areas.

We will not remove a TV from a wall or any mounted position. With my luck, the Bills will be winning the Superbowl and at the final moments of the game it will fall off the wall. No thanks!

Everything gets covered. Floors and furniture. We always use new plastic. We use tape sparingly as tape can damage surfaces. Also, the paints we use, have almost no overspray.

We started painting the kitchen first, as that area had less prep than the Great Room. We painted one coat on the kitchen ceiling per the Contract, however we were not happy with the results, so we rolled a second coat of paint on the ceiling in the kitchen – no change to the Contract.

First coat of ceiling paint:

We have found that painting ceilings two coats produces a much better uniform finish than one coat which is the standard across the industry.

Sherwin Williams seems to disappoint more than impress these days… Their masking tape lasted 15 minutes before it lost adhesion. This is the 4th house, and 3rd roll of tape from two different stores with this problem. The only thing we use from SW is their oil primer at this point.

The repairs are well on their way. We removed the broken drywall tape and replaced it with new tape. We also smoothed out the corner bead on the kitchen ceiling where it meets the high wall, as well as smooth it out on the facing wall above. This area is prone to cracking and other defects due to the ceiling being under pressure. Behind the drywall, is a load bearing beam that is supporting the second floor. This style of home is notorious for having some drywall damage in these areas.

The tape on this splayed angle de-laminated. From the floor it looked cracked. We removed the old tape and replaced with new tape. Plus repaired a bout a dozen nail pops.
